In praise of shitty mothers

I was working my way through my reader today when I happened upon a post on Her Bad Mother about kids and short hair. I'm fairly new to her blog but I really like what I've read so far. She's not afraid to tackle controversial issues--read her post advocating doulas for women getting abortions (and what a beautiful and perfectly reasonable idea, in my opinion—she said, standing in the middle of Kansas, waiting to be slayed).

Anyways, some of the gossip mongers in the tabloid media have made some cruel comments about Shiloh Pitt, daughter of Brad and Angelina, because she is commonly dressed in pants and recently received a very short hair cut. Apparently they are afraid the 3-year-old will have gender identity issues. Shudder. I wouldn't know any of this because... (wait for it) I don't read that kind of drivel. But Her Bad Mother has suggested that other bloggers post their own short hair child pictures to show the world that they were able to make it into adulthood relatively unscarred, or perhaps in praise of bad mothers everywhere. So for what it's worth, here you go:

Let the scarring begin

Way to botch the bang cut, bad mom

Guess who inherited the bad mom gene?

  1. Awesome Photos. I gave my daughter a similar legoman cut at around age 2. God, not sure if you've read my post where my mother paid me $50 in grade 6 to cut my hair short. Prior to that she had just cut it short and I had no say in the matter. I looked like Ronald McDonald until I was about 13. And I liked to wear converse Hi-Tops A LOT. I am now married - TO A GUY, have three kids and reckon I'm fairly comfortable with my gender. People just need to let kids be. They will be what the hell they want in the end :)

  2. My hair was such bad short hair that I was often mistaken for a boy (I was also tall). I finally grew it long, then i trusted my mother enough to take me to her hair salon before the beginning of grade 9...result? She and the hairdresser whispered together, me still trusting, and off went my hair. It was so short I cried for days.
Hmm. I will have to tell that story in full on my blog one of these days...like the day I finally get a scanner...

  5. I had uber short hair when I was about 10... I look back at pics of it now and cringe, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world to happen to me! XD

  6. I had a Dorothy Hamill style cute when I was 9 or 10 and hated it! Thought it made me look like a boy (horrors!) Today I love short hair on little girls and all my daughter wants is the opposite. Such is the dynamics of mothers/daughters. Sigh.

  7. In support of shitty mothers everywhere I'd like to share the haircut my mother inflicted on my sister (that's right, not me - my sister was a horror child and I think Mum practised a bit of revenge on her).

  9. I've always had short hair. Except for that brief mullet phase in college.

  11. Interesting, I always thought my mother was fairly bad but at least she never cut my hair short. Well done her.

  14. Anon-I read about it on someone else's most wonderful blog (see above), who read about it on someone else's blog, who apparently reads that drivel. I'm deleting your second comment as the commenter you refer to was making a comment in jest, as seems obviously apparent. Tsk tsk you.
