I love love thunderstorms

Brenda at Mummytime has started an iHappy meme wherein we're asked to post pictures of what makes us happy.  Pictures taken on our, ahem, iPhones.  She has graciously invited those of us in the android, or even crappy-cell-phone-camera market to participate as well.  As an EVO owner, would that make me Happy-o?  I've discovered some great photo apps for the EVO, which I'll show you next week.  But this week is all about thunderstorms, which we've had in abundance this spring, as we do every spring.

I love thunderstorms.  They roll over the Plains this time of year like some angry god coming home from a bender -- violent, dark, unpredictable.  The other day we went outside and the skys were roiling.  There was an inversion over our house and the clouds appeared to be bubbling down towards us.

All the neighbors came out of their homes to look at the spectacle.

It's rained for days now.  Day after day after day.  The kids love the rain and we let them go out and play in it as long as there isn't much lightning and they promise to leave their metal rods indoors.

After all, you're only a kid once.

There has been so much rain that it has changed the geography of our yard.  I don't remember there being a river there when we bought our house.

Best of all, an hour of hard play in a hard rain wears them out good.

Yeah, bring on the rain.

  2. I lurve thunder & lightning, so refreshing. The kids would love it in the jungles in Peru and Brazil, afternoon tropical downpours everyday, warm rain, never catch cold, and 15 minutes after the rain stops, you're dry again.

I have given you an anonymous mention on Fizz:

  5. Does that mean you now have "riverfront" property?

Those clouds do NOT look friendly. Awesome shot, though.

Me? I'm terrified of thunderstorms. It could be because I live in a tin box.

The kids look so happy playing in the rain! What fun!

  7. Gorgeous photos, especially the ones of your happy children joyfully splashing in the rain! We haven't gotten any real thunderstorms yet this year. Your own personal babbling brook, right in the front yard - bonus!

  9. I absolutely adore thunderstorms! I remember one Boxing day we had friends and neighbours up for a bbq and there was a huge storm, the path turned into a river and my children made boats and had a fine time. We were all saturated and yahooing away but this one man would not let his 2 boys play in the rain with us at all. I remember the look of longing on his boys faces and the look of horror on their fathers.

  13. Yeah, I'm kind of fond of the river myself. I always liked water features. The sky shot is great, isn't it? Jim took the pictures so I can't take credit. The sky was incredible. We stood out there a long time just looking at it. Until it started to rain. And Danny got spooked because he thought weird sky meant tornado.

  17. One of the things I was most excited about when my husband and I moved back to the midwest was the thunderstorms. I love nothing more than sleeping to one at night.

Playing in the rain is the best! Such great pictures.

  21. Thunderstorms are like air travel to me. I love the idea of them and am awestruck by them. But when I'm in one (a thunderstorm or a plane), I go to jelly!

I LOVE that first photo. You should frame that, it's incredible.

  22. Ha, first I find that Sharni tosses her pillow (to get to the cold side) like me, and then I discover your wonderful blog through Sharnanigans and find out we are kindred spirits too...first off, we luuuurve Australia, secondly, we love storms!!!! My kids are getting to know a "storm coming" sky and no longer complain when we go out driving to find the best storm watching vantage points! Love it and absolutely love those pics!

  23. @ Lisa, welcome! Always nice to find a kindred spirit. My kids are starting to get used to storms, too. They used to get really scared (still do a bit) but the thunder doesn't spook them the way it used to.
