AusBlogCon - tick, tickety, tock

So... AusBlogCon 2011 is only three weeks away and we're all hyperventilating, right?

I know I am. Because I'm coming out a little early so I'm already making a list of what I need to pack and trying to remember where I put those converters I bought for my last trip. And speaking of packing, Sydney, what should I come prepared for? Summer? Fall? Summall? It's the dead of winter here. Throw me a bone.

This conference is a little different from your average conference. Most people come to a conference to (a) learn something and (b) network. And while both of those things will be happening at AusBlogCon 2011, the real buzz behind it, from my perspective, is the excitement borne of a large group of bloggers who have befriended and supported each other, laughed and cried together, bonded over shared experience--all in the virtual world of blogging--who will now be meeting together in one place for the first time.

It's almost like 150 people met on Match.com, discovered they had something in common and have been writing each other for, oh, a year or two, and now they are finally meeting for a group date. And they've spent the last month obsessing about what they're going to wear on that date (thank you Nikki, you goddess).

A lot of bloggers have expressed fears and insecurities related to the conference. Will anyone find them interesting? (Yes, you will be as interesting as the rest of us!) What if I'm not pretty/thin/unwrinkly enough? (Remember Bloggers Without Makeup? We are all simply gorgeous. Full stop.) What if I'm too shy to talk to anyone? (Then come hold my hand and we'll meet people together!)

My fear is that I can't possibly spend enough time with all the people I want to talk to in one day. It will be overwhelming. I want to be able to meet and spend time with everyone I've made a connection with in the blogworld. Because you all are amazing. You write the most beautiful posts and leave the kindest comments and make me feel like I'm wrapped up in friendship even though I'm half a world away. And I have one day to say thank you. How can that happen?

I'm fortunate in that I'll be in Sydney beyond the conference and can catch up with my local friends then, but what about everyone coming in from Melbourne and the north coast and Perth and Tasmania and Adelaide? See? Overwhelming.  I've already decided that I need to kidnap Kirrily away so she misses her flight back to Melbs (do you think her family would mind?)

What I'm most looking forward to is coming home to Australia herself. To stand on her red soil and smell the scent of eucalyptus and the salt of the ocean and know that once again, I am home, if even just for a short time.

Ah, Sydney, it will be a sweet reunion. Woogsie, can't wait to see you at the airport after I've cleared the customs guy. Lori, my dear, I'm going to give you the biggest hug (and then we're going to go have some fun). Eden, fair warning, I'm coming to steal you away for an afternoon so we can share our stories and plot and laugh at life. Okay, I'm going to stop here (Brenda, Anne, Sawhole), I'm getting breathless.

Because I'm just so grateful to be able to come to Sydney, I'm linking up with the sensational Maxabella Love's.

So what about you? What are you most looking forward to about AusBlogCon? And which blogger would you kidnap away for a weekend?

  4. If it means anything, I am sooooorely regretting now not trying to find the money to cover the extra night, the dinner and the dance... and the plane ticket that is double the price on Sunday as opposed to Saturday night. If there was any way we could wrangle it so it did look like a kidnapping and the Feds then saw me home safely (if not a little hung over or bedraggled) then, dang, give it your best shot! ;) xoxoxoxox

  5. I could kidnap the GOFA, just so I get a whole, uninterrupted weekend with him. I could kidnap Kim from Frog ponds Rock, stroll through the markets and seek out a big shade tree to chat under. Or I could kidnap you and sit on my beach with your kids splashing a should distance away. Im just looking forward to hearing about how other make their blogs work. Ideas, I'm looking for ideas.

  6. @ Watershedd - I want to come sit on your beach with you!

  7. Can't wait to give you a great big hug, squeeze Lori's arm and get drunk with Mrs Woog.

And to spend some decent time with my friend Toushka. We may share a city, but we've barely caught up, so AusBlogCon will hopefully make up for that....

  8. Likewise Dorothy! It will be so nice to finally meet you. And I'm going to give Toushka a squeeze too. Love her.

  11. I am excited about it! I can't wait to meet you and so many others and have some time to myself. I need to keep pushing all my nervousness and insecurities aside and realise it's what a person is like on the inside not what they wear and what they look like that matters. xx

  12. I KNEW I was gonna regret not going. Starting to already. I know you are all gonna have a ball! xx

  13. @ Bianca, I have a feeling that most people's insecurities will dissolve pretty quickly. We're all just going to be average looking people in average clothes (except for stylin' Nikki!) and no one will care because we're having so much fun talking with each other about things that really matter. Can't wait to meet you.

  14. Too many to name individually!
    just excited WOOT!

  15. In my defence I have a style blog so it would be pretty bad form to turn up unstylish! Also, I'm lucky to have sponsors helping me in that department.
You're so on my kidnap list BTW. xx

  16. Starting to wish I had a blog!
Weather-wise it will probably be around 20-30 degrees C (70-90 degrees F) so quite warm.

  17. @ Nikki - Yay me!!!

@ Pixiechick - wow, that's not even kinda fallish, is it? 70's sounds lovely. 90's sounds a bit toasty!

  18. @ Shae, I know, I feel the same way!

  19. I think I only realised today how close it is - and YES - excited! Not nervous at all. Will be heaps of fun and great to see everyone.

Can't wait to meet you. Finally!

  20. I'm excited and nervous as hell!
I know I'm going to have trouble talking because face to face conversation is hard for me, my brain gets lost and my tongue ties itself in knots.
But I know all of you are going to be just lovely and you're right one day isn't nearly enough time. I'll be missing the dinner-dance, because I booked only the conference ticket, not knowing that my brother was going to help out with cost at the time.
The person I'd like to kidnap is Kim from Frogpondsrock. There is another I'd like to kidnap, but she isn't going...

  21. I gotta be real honest here. I could just vomit with jealousy.

Too bad I'm not a small girl or I could just stow away in your luggage...
I know you will have enough fun to cover all of us not headed to Sydney.
Can't wait to hear the full report.

  22. I fucking love how you wrote that Australia is your home. It really is, isn't it? You make me want to get to know it more.

I can't wait to meet you ... you're so beautiful, someone who I know I will be instantly at ease with. Therefore, can you please hold me while I hide from all the people. I am not joking in the slightest. Kthanks xoxox

  23. Would love to be coming too, oh well if I were based in NZ maybe I would be. Another time I guess, and hopefully by then you may even be based there too! Vx

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm just jealous as all hell that I'm unable to make it. If I could you and Kirrily would both be up for a double kidnapping... or you could both kidnap me and that would be good too. In fact, if you want to do that anyway and smuggle me out there in your luggage you'll find I'm both very amenable and very light.

    ReplyDelete
  25. *stamps foot petulantly*. I want to come!

Seriously, if ever there was a group of people that deserve to get to hang out together, it is pretty much everyone going!

I hope you all have an amazing time. Get some video up on youtube will you?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am so jealous! I wish that I could go too! I can't wait to read everyone's posts about it though!

  27. I'm not sure which emotion is making me hyperventilate the most - the nerves or the excitement! Alas, money negates me from staying the evening for dinner/drinking/dancing but if you could arrange a kidnapping I'm sure I wont be too missed on the home front :-)

I vote Wanderlust for Guest of Honour, followed by her ladies in waiting Mrs Woog (bound to be life of the party) and Lori (who I stand in awe of)

  28. enjoy yourself and hand out some big fat kisses from me!

  29. Argh I really shouldn't have let me get in the way of myself. I should have bought a ticket and just gone.

But I didn't. And there are a thousand reasons for that, and a thousands reasons against it.

I hope you have a wonderful time. xox

  30. Wishing you a marvellous time. I expect some seriously good blog posts from you all, so I can enjoy from afar! Mich x

  31. I hope you all have a fabulous time - I am very jealous! lots of stories and piccies please xxx

PS - I would kidnap all of you xx

  32. I'd say pack for summer. It's been warm here, and if you pack a pair of jeans and a jacket you should be right if it does turn cold. Our Autumns are pretty warm anyway.

I am probably the only person not going to this conference. Lol. Everyone seems to be going!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I also just want to meet everyone. I am glad I am coming for the 2 nights so I have increased the odds of that happening.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It really is going to be so much fun! I am looking forward to meeting so many people I couldn't possibly know where to start :-)

  35. Who would I kidnap for a weekend? Jayne and I'm bringing one her with me! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think you are going to be absolutely SWAMPED with love at that conference!!!!!! x

    ReplyDelete
  37. Coming over the Weds before but have to leave very early on the Sunday morning, which is a pity. Nervous and excited all at the same time. Thinking that a one day conference is just not enough time to meet and great everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm not going, I'm very much a newbie in blogland, but this was beautifully written and I hope you all have a ball. And drink up as much of Australia while you're here, it's such a gorgeous place to be.
    Cheers :)

  39. So many people I would love to spend a few hours one on one with over a few glasses of wine :) But I think I'll have to be happy with a few rushed greetings.

  40. I am getting excited! It's going to be a ball... I can't wait to meet all the wonderful bloggers that inspire me. You included.
