Grateful for home spun fun

I remember going to the fair as a kid and loving it. When it comes to town every year I take my kids, but to be honest it's lost it's charm for me. The rides are terribly expensive, the lines are long and after dark there are always a few unsavory types staggering around drunk. I find the whole affair exhausting.

But one thing I do love is the annual school carnival. My kids love it, too. It's good, honest fun for young kids and everybody wins, even the school. Who doesn't love a cake walk (or cupcake walk)? Pop bottle toss? Fishing for prizes?  Oh, and this year there was laser tag!

I was impressed if a little unnerved by my daughter's stealth and tactical elegance on the laser tag field. Who knew? At one point several older boys ganged up on her and said, "Let's get the girl!" She got angry as she thought this was royally unfair and gave them a piece of her mind. Way to go, babe. Don't ever stop standing up for yourself.

There was a giant hamster ball, in which my son proved to be very hamster-like

miniature golf...

and the best part of any carnival... cotton candy!

Go ahead. Spank me.

  2. Laser tag looks like fun!
School carnivals out here are a little different if I remember right; haven't been to one in yonks. Yonks = ages = a very long time.

Here in Aus, cotton candy is called fairy floss, and most often comes in cellophane bags.

  3. Two things.
1 - Your daughter is awesome. Kicking arse and beating the boys! Love it!
2 - I need to have a go in that hamster thingie!

Looks like you had a great day. :) x

  4. I wanna have a go on the laser tag! Though I dare say your daughter would trounce me. I have 2 left field and all the tactical elegance of an elephant wearing wellies made out of egg boxes.

  5. My daughter kicked the boys butts' at laser tag too. And I did when I was younger as well. Maybe it's a girl thing. Love the hamster-boy. As for school carnivals, they are still hideously expensive but at least you know it's going to a good cause I guess.

  6. I'm glad you all had fun. Our school had a fete this year and I bought extra fairy floss (in bags) to keep in the cupboard just for me.

I need to know - what's a cake or even cupcake walk?

  7. That's one serious school carnival! Wow! I wish we had laser tag at our school fairs.
Can't wait till my two little girls enter school so I can see how much things have changed. This has been a great insight!
Mind you, Aussie schools might be a little less interesting! :)

  9. @ Steve - sounds like you might be a good match for me in laser tag.

I think I'll pass on the hamster ball, though. I'll leave it to the rest of you and take the pictures.
