Things iWant vs cash iHave

The following is a compensated post

Do you remember that feeling as a child of having your nose pressed up to the store window, salivating over the latest, greatest Barbie Townhouse with (stop it!) a working elevator? Counting the coins from your allowance ($4.50) and asking your mum how much more you would need?

Fast forward 30 years and here we are salivating over iMacs and iPads (and by we I gently mean you, as I tend to salivate over things that don't plug into the wall). But though we may be afflicted with techno-love, just like yesteryear, we don't always have the money available to cover the expense of purchasing the Apple of our eye (and by we I really mean me, as I know some of you are reading this right now on your iPhones).

Well, did you know that you can rent a computer for as little as AU $5/week? You can at RentSmart. Perhaps you are starting your own business and don't have the money to front the cost of setting up a home office.  Are you a student in need or a laptop or do you want a PC the whole family can use?  Regardless of your situation, if you're not in a position to make a large outlay of cash, you may want to consider renting a PC, laptop or tablet and spreading the cost out over 24-48 months.

RentSmart also offers a host of benefits to its customers, including 100% tax-back to businesses and a free loaner laptop if yours is lost or stolen. You can also upgrade in the middle of your agreement (because they just came out with the iPad2, dammit) or purchase at the end of your term (because finally, finally, your never-ending divorce that was sucking the financial and emotional lifeblood out of you was finalized – oh sorry, we're talking about me again).

Anyhow, check them out. They have more than just computer equipment available to rent. In fact, you can even rent software. I noticed they have Adobe Photoshop (over which I do salivate). Just think, if I had access to Photoshop again I could do things like this:

As most of you know, I'm hoping to land on Australian shores before too long. When I do, I probably won't have a lot of cash to throw around. I may consider the option of renting some of the things I will need. Now that I think about it, I could rent some patio furniture to enjoy the nice weather. And a pool for the kids. And a nanny for the kids. An immigration visa; a case of wine (would they give me a replacement if I 'lost' it?). And what the hey, throw in an iPad, so I can blog from my chaise lounge.

No, really. I actually do want an iPad.

  1. Im sorry. Did you just say that your divorce had been finalised, or did I dream that?

And yes. I want an iPad as well. I think it would help (I could be wrong) with this whole trying-to-find-something-portable-that-I-can-actually-SEE thing we've got going on right now).

I so wanted that Barbie townhouse.

  2. @Melissa - no, it's theoretical, I'm the one dreaming. Maybe we should all pitch in and get you an iPad if you really think you could see it better. xoxo

  3. I have this beloved regular at the coffee shop who is Australian and she always makes me think of you. She came in this morning and even when the shop is slammed, she is always so sweet and makes a point to have her kids be polite as well. I think of you every time I see her. :) Random contribution to the post, but I've been meaning to tell you for a while.

  5. @inkpuddle - that's so sweet. Aussies and well minded kids make you think of me. :)

Actually had a mom stop on the way out of McDonalds Playplace today and tell me what polite kids I had! #proudmomma

  7. I also want an Ipod/Ipad whatever you call the damn thing. Darn near everyone at #nnb2011 had one, or one of those nifty little computers that let you type really fast but not phone people. I don't know which would be better, perhaps both? May the technology fairies be kind to us all ...

  8. Me too. I want an iPad. Desperately. Madly. Deeply. Renting wouldn't be enough. I'm a possessive soul. I need to own utterly.

  9. I'm the odd one out. I do NOT want an i-pad or i-phone. Really don't need one. Would love a kindle though.

More importantly, you're coming to Aus. soon??? To live here???
    YAY!!!!

  10. I owned one of those barbie townhouses with a working elevator. It was pink and yellow (Barbie had no taste in colours) - I have an iphone and don't really need an Ipad but would love a Mac computer.

  11. @MaidinAustralia - both, def!

@Steve - I'm with you on that, ownership is the only solution there.

@Adalita - I had the airplane and sportscar, but not the townhouse, dammit. Oh how I coveted that!
