I must be mad

It started like any other Saturday (which is to say I hid under the covers when I heard the kids, wondering for the eleventy-hundredth time why they jump out of bed at 7:00 a.m. sharp on a weekend).

But all was soon to change.

I had 13 seven-year-olds descending upon my house in short order.

When my son told me he wanted to have his party at the house this year (despite my enthusiastic suggestion of a large facility with bouncy equipment), I was stumped. How do you entertain a bunch of seven-year-olds?

And why me?

Nevertheless, I put on my big girl socks and consulted google.

I came up with this: a mad scientist party.

Behold the madness....

We learned about helium

We dyed our own frosting and decorated cookies

Then we got to reach in and pick out our own bug from a gelatin brain
(sorry for poor quality - photographer was doubling as harried party mom)

Experiments were made.

Photos were taken of be-wigged and be-goggled children.

Presents were opened with glee.

Kittens were terrorized.

Unimaginable decibel levels were reached.

I praised the heavens when the last child left.

Next year... I'm totally thinking bouncy equipment.

*** huge thanks to the mom who decided to stay and help (brave soul), and especially to the mad scientist who showed up to entertain the minions - you rock ***

*** boo to the several parents who didn't RSVP, and especially the one who not only didn't RSVP, but also dropped off little brother (and ran) ***

  1. My good woman, what were you thinking?! But seriously, looked like fun and is a very clever party idea! Though definitely boo to non RSVP'er (pet hate) and especially uninvited extras!

  2. Fantastic idea for a party!! I don't have children, so have never hosted a kids party. Do parents really drop extras and run? Free babysitting I guess.

    b) I cannot BELIEVE how rude some people are!!!

    c) you are seriously awesome.

  4. A tad mad, but mostly fabulous!
Your son will be forever grateful.

  5. At home parties are the best and yours looks so creative and fun. I am so going to have to do the brain/bug game, that will appeal to my girl so much. Aaaaand, maybe to me as well. ;-)

Yey for the helper Mum, I know what a difference they can make.
Uninvited extras is ever so rude. Quite simply, no future invite is the appropriate reaction.

  6. Ooh.. That's a cool idea for a party. I bet the kids had fun. I think you, the helper mum and the mad scientist deserve a drink or some chocolate or three.

  7. Holy Hell woman! You're mad! Alexander would LOVE that theme though. I'm going to have to throw him a science themed party! That's an awesome idea.

That brain thing is gross. Seriously gross. I'm leaving now to take my mind off the grossness....

  8. Great party, but don't get me started on the non-RSVPers, the drop and runs, and the people who not only don't RSVP but add a sibling. UGH! At least you made some happy kid memories. xo

  9. Hats off to you! Looks like a fantastic party!

I also hate it that people don't have manners to RSVP... It happens here as well!

But I am also voting for the bouncing equipment & place far far from home ;-)

  10. AAAAWESOME! Such a cool, cool party. For a second there I thought that was you with the beard... great costume, I thought.

You know I hear your pain with the random drop ins. I wrote a whole post about it it bothers me that much.

  14. I wouldn't even mind the drop in's if they asked in advance or RSVP'd with the number.

Did you use one of those Science Groups that I see advertised everywhere? It looks great!

  15. ADORABLE idea! This reminded me of something my own mother would have done when I was growing up. You definitely have a creative side like her! Looks like it was a great time.
