How Not to Shop (a Reprise)

Today I had an appointment for my bi-annual pedicure, because I like to splurge like that. When I sat down, the gal doing my nails (whose name was Kristin) asked me this:

Kristin: Are you allergic to cats?

Kristin: No. Why?

Kristin: I brought a kitten into the salon today. I found him on the side of the road this morning. I'm not sure what to do with him. Would you like to see him?

Kristin: ???

Kristin: Here he is (places bundle into my arms). You don't want to adopt a kitten by chance, do you?

Do I?

And so it was that our household grew by one today.

On the way home I had planned to stop at Trader Joe's, because they have a beautiful emergency exit.

As a bonus, they have great produce, too. I didn't want to leave Buster in the car, as it was a warm day, but that is okay because I've always wanted a purse kitten.

There was also a natural pet store right next to Trader Joe's (kismit), and I walked in there with my purse kitten and they estimated his age at around 4 weeks and recommended organic hard cat food mixed with goats milk to soften it. When we came home, I whipped him up a small batch, which he devoured. Now he is resting up.

I realize it's unusual to get a cat at a hair salon when they have perfectly good kittens at Walmart, but seriously, could you say no to that face?

Can't wait until the kids get home....

  4. He looks gorgeous! What do your other felines think? We also adopted another giveaway on Friday - Her name is Flo and she is a 2yr old Cornish Rex - so that makes us 3 felines too! She is very vocal (like a siamese) and very oriental looking with fur that doesn't shed (best thing ever!). Our boys were quite put out when she arrived but she has been the aggressor hissing and spitting and chasing. Now they are calming down and we now have minimal hissing. Dexter our scaredy cat is now brave enough to chase her back so things are going well! I hope all goes well with your new addition....

    1. How funny that we both adopted new cats! You'll have to post a picture to FB so I can see her. She sounds gorgeous.

I introduced him to the other kitties tonight. They were cautiously inquisitive. No hissing, just some sniffing and one low growl from Lulu. I think it's going to work. Of course, he's hardly intimidating -- small enough to fit in my shoe with room to spare!

  6. That's MAD. I went shopping today and came home with some unplanned maple fudge, but I've never accidentally acquired a purse kitten!
Although one time I sent my husband to the shops for milk and he came home with a gyrocopter, which was a bit weird.

    1. I think in the long run the fudge requires less upkeep, which probably means you win.

  7. I've been slightly overrun with kittens this year. My cat had three (all of which have gone to good homes now). Then a cat on a friends farm had four georgous black kittens and when they were old enough I broughttwo home to get them used to people ect before rehoming them (two still to catch!). And then a couple of days ago three more kittens appeared at the farm from somewhere (tabbies this time) and so they are on the waiting list to be brought here at some point. I cant resist a kitten and Im pretty sure if I were offered one whilst out shopping Id come home with that too. The only problem I have is giving them up when I find homes for them!

  9. Thanks for the grin from ear to ear - love it - get pedicure and bring home purse kitten - I also love the exit door at your farmer joe store. As I am here in Australia - what do they sell beside those wicked looking biscuits/peanut butter thingys - at farmer joes - to me it sounds like a produce store?

    1. Trader Joe's is a bit of an icon here. They are a natural foods store and have beautiful fruits, veggies, flowers, etc at great prices. It's not too close, otherwise I would shop there every week! Here's their link if you want to check them out: http://www.traderjoes.com/
